My name is Erin Sullivan. I am originally from Honolulu, Hawaii in USA. I have been teaching for around 2 years.
I first started teaching at an international summer camp during the summer of 2015. I was certified to become an English teacher during the fall of 2014. It was a 100 hour TEFL / TESOL course hosted at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. The practicums were a little challenging but the course overall was really excited. I met people from all over the world and after finishing the course I was left with the feeling that it was the beginning of a new adventurous life for me. I decided to become a teacher because I genuinely believe that knowledge, the understanding of other cultures, and open-mindedness are the most crucial steps towards creating a more peaceful world.
I have taught in USA, China, and Turkey. I have traveled to India, Indonesia, Greece, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, China, Turkey, Japan, Georgia, and to beautiful Russia…..oh and Lithuania
I love teaching children because they are like a tabula rasa , or a “blank slate”. Their minds have so much potential to absorb large quantities of knowledge at a rapid pace because the neuroplasticity of their brains is fresh and young. I also love working with kids because, aside from being a serious teacher, I am also goofy and I like to make people laugh. I feel I have a strong bond with children. I am also a very maternal person. One of the most rewarding parts about working with children is seeing how excited they get when they recognize their own progress, and in turn seeing how that excitement often triggers a desire for them to keep striving for more.
One of the most difficult parts (but also rewarding parts) about teaching children is learning to reach out and help children whose parents neglect to discipline them within their own homes. Many children during these times are just given an Ipad and sit in front of a screen watching cartoons all day in order to pacify their mood. This can make teaching difficult but it’s also really important to reach out to these kids, because helping them can have a huge impact on their social and psychological development.
I decided to come back to Russia and teach because I am really fascinated with Russian culture and I also want to learn the Russian language. As far as food goes, I pretty much love every Russian soup that I have tried. Thus far, especially shi soup because its really simple and nutritious. I really do not like American fast food because its basically cancerous, however I do miss American Tex-mex food and guacamole (the Americanized version of Mexican food).
I am really proud that teaching has giving me the ability to live in and experience new cultures. I like to run marathons for fun. I recently ran the 42 kilometer Idaho Springs Marathon. I hope to run a Marathon in Russia. Also, one day, I hope to run one of the winter snow Ultra Marathons in Siberia.
Studying Chinese is my big love in life. Studying Russian is quickly becoming my new big love. I am doing “just ok” with the language. I still have quite a lot to learn.
